Should You Upgrade to a Tankless Water Heater?

When it is time to replace your older tank water heater, you want to consider a tankless model as an upgrade option. Tankless water heaters offer a variety of benefits that a tank water heater cannot offer like boosted energy efficiency and nearly endless hot water.

Tankless Water Heater Operation

Tankless water heaters can be powered by either natural gas or electricity. Each one offers different benefits. An electric model is available if you don’t have gas lines in your home and will work great. A gas model offers an extra boost in energy efficiency. The only difference between the two types of tankless water heaters is how it is powered.

With gas and electric tankless water heaters, turning on a hot water faucet or using an appliance set to use hot water triggers the unit to turn on and heat water. As water enters the tankless system, gas or electricity power the mechanisms to instantly heat the water up for usage.

The tankless water heater will remain active for as long as you have a hot water faucet on or are using an appliance set to hot. After your chores or activities are complete and you turn off the water, the tankless model stops heating.

Energy Efficiency

Tankless water heaters consume less energy overall compared to a tank model. The reason for this is that a tankless water heater only needs to use energy when it heats up water because you need it at that moment. With a tank water heater, there is a supply of hot water around the clock even when you are using it.

Maintaining hot water all day and night ultimately consumes more energy compared to only heating water when it is actively being used. When you compare the potential energy savings for tank vs. tankless models, the difference may not be a lot for a single month. Yet it’s easy for the savings to add up quickly over the life of a tankless water heater.

Hot Water Anytime

Perhaps the greatest benefit is that you have a nearly endless supply of hot water for as long as you want to use it. Take a shower for as long as you want or do multiple loads of clothes and dishes in a row using hot water without running out.

When you have a tank water heater, you are limited by the size of the storage tank. When the supply of hot water runs out, you have to wait until the tank fills up and reaches a high temperature before you have hot water again. This can take an hour or longer.

One Potential Downside

The only downside to consider is that a tankless water heater may limit how much water you can use at one time. For example, if two people take showers at the same time in different bathrooms, each location may experience lower water pressure. The solution to this is to spread out hot water needs instead of completing them all at once.
