As you turn on your furnace for this winter season, you may be hearing some unusual sounds that you aren’t used to noticing. Should you be concerned about these noises or are they normal? Keep reading to learn about five common furnace sounds and what problems they may point to.
If you notice any of them, give our team a call for furnace repair in Rogers. It’s better to stay ahead of furnace problems than to wait for something major to happen. Our team is here to help with any of your furnace needs, whether they are big or small.
Booming Sound
This type of noise is especially concerning if your furnace uses gas to produce heat for your home. A gas furnace uses combustion, meaning that gas gets released into the heat exchanger where a flame ignites to create heat and transfer it into the air of your home. It’s a process that needs to be very precise.
An explosion can happen in the chamber if too much gas is released into the chamber or the flame igniting is a few seconds too late. The resulting sound of this explosion is a boom. It may be louder or softer depending on how severe the problem is. No matter how loud or soft a booming sound is during furnace startup, it needs to be addressed.
Rattling or Tapping Sound
You could hear this type of sound for a couple of different reasons. First, the ductwork that attaches to your furnace may be loose and moving around a little when your furnace turns on to blow heat through. It’s also possible that a small component inside the furnace itself is loose and moving around. It’s better to address this type of concern sooner rather than later before it worsens.
Squealing Sound
Squealing usually means that a belt somewhere inside your furnace is loose instead of being secure. Squealing can also happen because of poor airflow. If there is a blockage that is only allowing air to pass through a very small space, the air may squeal as the pressure pushes it through. Either way, it’s a sound worth checking out. Squealing should never be a part of normal furnace operation.
Clicking Sound
When the blower motor inside your furnace is struggling, you may hear a clicking sound. The clicking may be quieter or louder, but it is usually persistent. Dirt and grime inside the motor can lead to a clicking sound as the blower struggles to work against the buildup.
Sometimes cleaning out the motor and relubricating it is enough to get it working like normal again. If the clicking sound goes on for too long, the blower motor may be beyond simple cleaning and in need of repair or replacement instead. That’s why it’s so important to call us when you begin hearing any unusual sounds.
Humming Sound
Your furnace has a transformer inside of the unit that brings electricity in and then converts it to the proper voltage for the unit. If the transforming begins malfunctioning, it can hum during operation. Anything having to do with electricity is dangerous, so don’t try to fix a transformer problem (or any other heater issue for that matter) by yourself. Give our team a call instead.
